China RoHS compliant connectors containing LEDs
Amphenol Commercial Products is actively working with Industry leaders to address
the issue of LED survival rates when PCB assemblies
containing
Connectors built with LEDs are processed through
high-temperature Lead-Free reflow processes.
At this date, some LEDS in some Connectors may
FAIL if subjected to the Infra-Red (IR) Reflow profile
consistent with the Lead-Free (JEDEC-020C) profile.
Amphenol connectors containing LEDs
must NOT be processed using Lead-Free Infra-Red reflow soldering
using JEDEC-020C (or similar) profiles.

Products makes no claim that our connectors containing LEDs
can be processed through this RoHS profile without
subsequent
damage occurring to the LEDs and subsequent failure
of the connector.
Any customer who chooses to use our connectors
containing LEDs for their assemblies and does not
consider this in their procedures
does so at their own risk and Amphenol
Our present recommendation is to process these types of connectors containing LEDs using Lead-Free WAVE soldering
or Post
Lead-Free IR reflow insertion methods only.
At this writing, Amphenol does not have
a solution to this although the goal is to have a solution by 2008.
Our engineers and technical people are working with
our Customers and LED manufacturers to develop LEDs
that will survive the JEDEC-020C profile.
Already, we see a large variation in the Reflow
profiles being used by customers who are only now trying to use lead-free connectors.
This lack of strict adherence or loose interpretation
of the JEDEC-020C profile is exacerbating the failure rate of LEDs in a connector.
We will continue to work with Customers to make sure
that the optimum profile is understood and being used correctly.
